The Importance of Natural Skincare...

There’s this annoying myth floating around in the beauty industry that really gets under my skin – the idea that the more scientific lingo you find in your skincare product’s ingredients list, the better it is. Not so!

The Big Pharma Illusion

What Big Pharma (since many brands are now owned by the pharmaceutical industry) wants us to believe: Piling on a ton of fancy-sounding synthetic stuff will magically make you look forever young. Trust me, it’s not the skincare secret it’s cracked up to be.

Let’s talk truth: Many ingredients in our skincare are derived from petrochemicals. Not a great idea for our skin or our health. In my three decades in the beauty business, I’ve witnessed a shift towards profit over health, and it’s not doing us any favours. Cheaper, harmful ingredients are doing a number on our skin and, surprise, AGEING US FASTER!!!

I’ve been around the block in the beauty industry, and I’ve seen the rise of synthetic ingredients first-hand. They might promise the world, but they often deliver more problems than solutions, e.g., acne treatments. Been there, done that.

The ‘Dirty’ Truth

It’s called the beauty industry, but there are aspects of this business that are far from beautiful…. Let’s face a few facts:

  • Animal Testing: Despite being banned in the UK and Europe, major beauty players still allow testing for the Chinese market, raising ethical concerns as animals are subjected to potentially harmful substances.
  • Harmful Ingredients: Many beauty products contain ingredients linked to skin irritation, allergies, and even severe long-term health issues, challenging the notion that these products are always beneficial.
  • False Advertising and Unrealistic Beauty Standards: The industry perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards through heavily photoshopped images, promoting anti-ageing products with young models, fostering negative self-perception, and contributing to mental health issues.
  • Exploitation of Workers: Manufactured in developing countries with lax labour laws, beauty products often involve the exploitation of workers through low wages and poor working conditions.
  • Environmental Impact: Production and packaging contribute to environmental issues with single-use plastics, excessive packaging, and non-biodegradable materials posing a threat to the planet.

Friendly Tip: Go Natural!

Where and when you can I recommend that you opt for products with 100% plant-derived ingredients. My personal choice is Tropic Skincare, these clean, plant-based, vegan, and 100% natural skincare products not only nourish the skin but also steer clear of harmful chemicals, toxins, and fillers. What’s more, their commitment to sustainability means recyclable packaging and ethical manufacturing right here in the UK
