We are all aware of how music can affect our mood, our energy and how we feel but have you ever really thought about why?
Our bodies hold an energetic vibration and each of us have our own unique frequency. When a piece of music connects with these vibrational frequencies it can cause physical changes in our body. When we resonate with these musical sounds we can heal, find balance, deeply relax and release deep seated stress.
What is sound healing?
Sound has been used in healing for millennia and in our modern times there are many tools to choose from when practicing sound therapy; voice, singing bowls, gongs, and tuning forks to name but a few, are used to invoke deeply relaxed states of consciousness.
Typically, you would immerse yourself in the sound for at least 20-minutes or more. As you relax deeply into the sound waves your brain patterns begin to alter, relaxing the nervous system, and it changes how our blood moves through the body, increasing the oxygenating, hydrating, and detoxifying processes of the blood. This very interesting video clip shows how a 20-minute gong bath can impact on the blood:
How sound impacts the skin…
In a Face yoga practice, we use exercise, massage, and acupressure to encourage increased circulation so that we can bring more nutrients and oxygen to the skin to encourage cell renewal and collagen & elastin production. Can you imagine the benefits of bringing sound into the equation as well?
With the addition of sound, we can potentially
- help relieve pain
- Relax tension in the muscles
- Relax the adrenals, relieving stress and balancing the body
- Promote better sleep patterns
- Improves breathing patterns
- Calms and relaxes the nervous system
- Promotes healing in the body
This can then benefit our skin by:
- Increased circulation and lymphatic drainage
- Improved collagen & elastin production
- Improved muscle tone
- Reduced puffiness and sagging
- Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- Tightening of the skin and improved skin tone
So how can we add sound to our Face Yoga practice?
One of my favourite ways to use sound is using Mantra (chanting). I chant for a few minutes each morning before my face yoga practice to bring my energy into balance and set my intention for the day.
In Sanskrit “Man” means ‘mind’ and “Tra” means ‘release’, so it translates to “releasing the mind”. Using a mantra can help to focus the mind as well as calming the nervous system, as using the throat helps to relax the Vegas nerves.
There are many mantras to choose from and each one can help you achieve a specific goal. Three of my favourites are:
Ohm – One of the most commonly known mantras, the Ohm is the sound of the universe and when chanted can open the third eye and bring balance to the mind and body.

Ohm Namo Narayanaya – helps to achieve self-realisation and bring oneness with the divine.

Ohm Ghrini Suryay Namah – known as the beauty mantra, this mantra helps to flush toxins from the skin and promote a glowing complexion.

For a mantra to have the greatest impact it should be chanted 108 times.
The ultimate goal…
By now I hope you can see the using sound as part of your Face Yoga practice can be a very powerful tool, but the goal here is to take you inward, to go to the part of your mind where you can tap into the energy that your body needs to transform your health and slow down the ageing process.
