Menopause and the Skin…

Menopause is a natural phase that every woman goes through, marking the end of her reproductive years. Alongside the well-known physical and hormonal changes, menopause can have various effects on the skin due to hormonal changes that occur during this stage of a woman’s life. Understanding these effects can help you navigate this transition with confidence and take better care of your skin.

Common ways that menopause affects the skin:

Dryness and De-hydration: Declining oestrogen levels during menopause can lead to a reduction in the skin’s natural oil production, resulting in dryness and an overall lack of moisture. This can make the skin feel rough, tight, and more prone to irritation.

Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Oestrogen helps maintain the skin’s elasticity and thickness. As oestrogen levels decrease during menopause, collagen and elastin production may decrease as well, leading to the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Thinning and Fragility: Oestrogen also plays a role in maintaining the thickness and strength of the skin. With lower oestrogen levels, the skin may become thinner and more fragile, making it more susceptible to injuries and bruises.

Uneven Pigmentation: Hormonal fluctuations during menopause can trigger changes in melanin production, leading to the development of uneven skin pigmentation, such as dark spots or patches. This is commonly known as hyperpigmentation or age spots.

Acne and Breakouts: Some women may experience an increase in acne or breakouts during menopause. Hormonal imbalances can contribute to the overproduction of sebum (oil) in the skin, leading to clogged pores and acne flare-ups.

Reduced Healing Capacity: Oestrogen is involved in the skin’s healing process. As oestrogen levels decline, the skin’s ability to repair itself may diminish, resulting in slower wound healing and longer recovery times for cuts, scrapes, or other skin injuries.

Sensitivity and Irritation: Menopause can make the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation. This can be due to a combination of factors, including reduced barrier function, thinner skin, and changes in skin pH levels.

It’s important to note that while these skin changes are common during menopause, not every woman will experience them to the same extent. Additionally, other factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and sun exposure can also influence how menopause affects the skin. Implementing a consistent skincare routine, staying hydrated, protecting the skin from sun damage, and seeking advice from a dermatologist can help manage these skin changes and maintain healthy skin during menopause.

A skincare regimen for a menopausal skin:

Skin Care for Menopause

Keep the skin clean:

Avoid harsh cleansers and hot water that can strip the skin of its natural oils. Where possible use an oil-based cleanser that will draw impurities and dirt out of the skin and keep it hydrated at the same time.  My Tropic recommendation: Smoothing Cleanser

An extra burst of hydration:

I always recommend you use a toner after cleansing as it has two beneficial uses.  Firstly, it removes any excess cleanser to prevent drying and it also gives and extra burst of hydration.  My Tropic recommendation: Morning Mist

Necessary Hydration:

It is essential to focus on keeping the skin hydrated through menopause. A de-hydrated skin makes fine lines and wrinkles look deeper and more prominent. Use serums and moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid which help attract and retain moisture. My Tropic recommendations: Rainforest Dew and Skin Feast

Tackle Lines & Wrinkles:

Incorporate anti-aging skincare products containing retinoids, peptides, or growth factors can help stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture. Also, a regular use of sunscreen is crucial to protect the skin from harmful UV rays that can accelerate skin aging. My Tropic recommendations: Skin Dream & Sun Day

Combat Hyperpigmentation:

Combat these changes by incorporating brightening ingredients such as vitamin C into your skincare routine. Vitamin C helps to lighten dark spots and promote a more even complexion over time. My Tropic recommendation: Glow Berry

Beat those Breakouts:

Look for non-drying, plant-based products that contain pre-biotics to support the skins microbiome. Serums that contain lactic and salicylic acids can be effective in treating and preventing acne. My Tropic recommendation: Ocean Dive or Pure Lagoon

Soothe the redness:

Opt for gentle products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid using harsh exfoliants or abrasive scrubs, as they can exacerbate sensitivity. Calming, plant-based ingredients can help soothe and reduce skin irritation. My Tropic recommendation: The NEW Re-leaf Moisturiser

How Face Yoga supports the skin during menopause

Introducing a daily facial exercise & massage programme can really help improve the appearance and health of your skin, including during menopause. When you use specific movements and exercises targeting the muscles of the face and neck you can lift, tone and rejuvenate the skin by increasing circulation and boosting collagen and elastin production.

Here are some face yoga exercises that can be beneficial during menopause:

Face Yoga Poses

The Lion Face: This exercise helps release tension in the face and neck muscles while promoting relaxation. Sit in a comfortable position, inhale deeply, and as you exhale, open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue as far as possible, and stretch your fingers wide. Hold this pose for a few seconds, then relax and repeat a few times.

Cheek Lifter: This exercise helps tone the muscles in the cheeks and reduce the appearance of sagging. Smile as wide as possible while keeping your lips closed. Place your index fingers on the corners of your mouth and apply gentle upward pressure. Hold this position for a few seconds, then relax and repeat several times.

Forehead Smoother: Menopause can contribute to the formation of forehead lines and wrinkles. Place your palms on your forehead with your fingers facing inward. Apply gentle pressure and slowly sweep your palms outwards, smoothing your forehead as you go. Repeat this movement a few times.

Jawline Definer: Menopause can also lead to loss of skin elasticity and definition in the jawline. Place your palms on your cheeks and press your fingertips into the skin. Gently sweep your hands upward along the jawline, applying light pressure as you go. Repeat this motion several times.

Eye Firmer: This exercise can help reduce puffiness and firm the muscles around the eyes. Place your index fingers on the outer corners of your eyes and apply gentle pressure. Look up and squint your lower eyelids upward, while simultaneously pulling your outer eye corners towards your temples. Hold this pose for a few seconds, then relax and repeat a few times.

Remember to perform these face yoga exercises with clean hands and a relaxed facial expression. Start with a few repetitions of each exercise and gradually increase over time. Consistency is key, so try to incorporate face yoga into your daily skincare routine.

Additionally, face yoga should be complemented with a holistic approach to skincare during menopause. This includes protecting your skin from sun exposure, staying hydrated, adopting a healthy diet rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, and using skincare products that address your specific concerns.

To conclude…

While menopause brings about significant changes in the body, it’s important to remember that these changes are natural and manageable. By understanding how menopause affects the skin and adopting a consistent and tailored skincare routine, you can help mitigate the impact and maintain a healthy, glowing complexion. Remember, taking care of your skin is not only about appearance but also about nurturing your overall well-being during this transformative time.
